Humanity is at the threshold of history. Civilization and science will either rescue him or destroy him. More than ever before, the need to look back at the issue of polygamy and appraise
it is very much relevant now. Arc. T. E. Elsborne in his book, “The Plural
Marriages in Modern Societies”, describe polygamy as a marriage order that enable men to take care of all marriage ready
women in their society without any left over. In other words, in polygamy, every
woman is as a matter of social order, married, betrothed or earmarked for marriage to a man.
It is an extension of capitalism to make marriage available to only a few. Capitalism does not make room for
support for others. Instead, people are encouraged to keep what they have for
themselves and their immediate family alone; even when it is clear that what they have is more than the needs and requirements
of their families whether now or in the future.
The United Nations Populations
figures has clearly put the population of women in the world today as three women to every one man. This is clearly understandable from science as already stated. Since
medical physiology has established that more women survive childhood than men, a situation that has been compounded by civilization
and wars, the surplus were by good intend catered for by polygamy. If we must
not be mischievous, every woman needs a man. That is the cause of the scheming
and maneuvering by most young women to attract attention even from men they know are already married. Some are already aware of the left over situation and are trying to escape it. Others simply provide for it by becoming single parents. Yet
their sexual needs are not meet. So, ultimately, they become lesbians.
Today, an intriguing fact is that despite the round and loud condemnation and criticism of polygamy, more and
more people still go into it in the name of divorce, single-parenthood, widow/widower, career women/men and separated
One of the most beautiful aspect of modern polygamous practice, is that all the women involved are career women
and busy business women solvent enough to cater for themselves financially. Since
the need to depend on their husbands for their domestic and personal needs has been greatly reduced for women in modern polygamy,
marriage becomes a fun rather than war. It has shifted from being a “do
or die” affair to an interesting, fun-filled, jolly club they always want to be in.
The home, becomes a big club house where every member contributes his or her distinct talents, quota and resources
towards the happiness of all with the husband acting out the role of the club president.
